I received an ARC of this from The NOVL, as one of their July Reps for The NOVLbox。 Spoiler free::: I am absolutely speechless。 I absolutely adore this book and this series。 I know it gets cheesy and can feel overwhelming when every single detail matters and everyone's birthday means something, and all the symbols have two meanings, but I absolutely love it。 This series is so engaging and I read both this one and The Inheritance Games in one sitting。 Definitely a worthy follow up to the first on I received an ARC of this from The NOVL, as one of their July Reps for The NOVLbox。 Spoiler free::: I am absolutely speechless。 I absolutely adore this book and this series。 I know it gets cheesy and can feel overwhelming when every single detail matters and everyone's birthday means something, and all the symbols have two meanings, but I absolutely love it。 This series is so engaging and I read both this one and The Inheritance Games in one sitting。 Definitely a worthy follow up to the first one! 。。。more

The ending was pretty much rushed, no closure was given to the characters, and I feel so sorry for this one specific character because it didn’t deserve to be assassinated like this。 I felt so many questions were left unanswered。 And, now we may never know。 MY RATING: 2。89/5 。。。more

I NEED THIS BOOK NOW, I need more of Grayson and Xander (my favorite Hawthorns<3), more of Avery and of course more mystery and puzzles。 I’m team Grayson all the way, I rlly hope they end up together。 I like Jameson but I felt more chemistry between Grayson and Avery besides even if Jameson at the end rlly ended up liking her I didn’t like that most part of the book he kept seeing her as a part of the puzzle and the game instead of seeing Avery as herself (and as a person instead of a tool)。Gray I NEED THIS BOOK NOW, I need more of Grayson and Xander (my favorite Hawthorns<3), more of Avery and of course more mystery and puzzles。 I’m team Grayson all the way, I rlly hope they end up together。 I like Jameson but I felt more chemistry between Grayson and Avery besides even if Jameson at the end rlly ended up liking her I didn’t like that most part of the book he kept seeing her as a part of the puzzle and the game instead of seeing Avery as herself (and as a person instead of a tool)。Grayson genuinely cared for her and when Xander told the others that Avery needed them (when they needed to put their prints in the tunnel and that) he was the first to show up, Jameson was the last one and made them wait。 Also I’m excited to see more of Xander, I loved him so much and I’m happy he’ll have more importance on this sequel。 。。。more

Rating: 2。5 stars。 For me, this was pretty similar to the first one。 Same structure, similar plot, same sort of weak mystery。 I definitely found it entertaining just like the first book, but some more structure in plot and pacing would've been nice。 I feel like whenever one piece of the puzzle was revealed, the author added more questions and more pieces and it was just too much at some point。 I liked the romance better in this one than in the first, and I think the characters definitely all gre Rating: 2。5 stars。 For me, this was pretty similar to the first one。 Same structure, similar plot, same sort of weak mystery。 I definitely found it entertaining just like the first book, but some more structure in plot and pacing would've been nice。 I feel like whenever one piece of the puzzle was revealed, the author added more questions and more pieces and it was just too much at some point。 I liked the romance better in this one than in the first, and I think the characters definitely all grew on me as well。 The ending was pretty messy though, it sort of felt incomplete and the mystery still wasn't completely solved, which was pretty unsatisfying。 I also think the last 20% or so were way too fast-paced compared to the rest of the book and therefore seemed messy。 It would have felt more natural if those events had been spaced out。 Overall this didn't disappoint me but also didn't positively surprise me, but it was a fun book, just like The Inheritance Games, too。 。。。more

*I won an ARC of the book in a giveaway from The Novl*Overall, I enjoyed the sequel to The Inheritance Games。 Book 2 picks up immediately after book 1 ends, so it did take me about 50 pages or so to get oriented with the story because I was having to remember that happened in book 1。 After that, though, I quiet enjoyed the mystery and trying to figure out the twists (even if there weren’t as many ciphers and riddles in this book)。 Was the book realistic? No。 But, like the first book, this one su *I won an ARC of the book in a giveaway from The Novl*Overall, I enjoyed the sequel to The Inheritance Games。 Book 2 picks up immediately after book 1 ends, so it did take me about 50 pages or so to get oriented with the story because I was having to remember that happened in book 1。 After that, though, I quiet enjoyed the mystery and trying to figure out the twists (even if there weren’t as many ciphers and riddles in this book)。 Was the book realistic? No。 But, like the first book, this one sure was fun to read。 Even so, there were a few issues that made it hard for me to like book 2 as much as book 1。 First, everything is really fast-paced and there were times where I thought things needed to be explained more/better。 Second, the ending of book 2 felt kind of abrupt and in some ways didn’t make sense。 Frankly, the ending felt a underdeveloped and like it wasn’t effectively set up through the rest of the mystery and twists。 Third, the love triangle was silly and distracted from the rest of the plot。 Finally, I had thought this was supposed to be a duology, and the main plot and love triangle were resolved, but there were still enough loose ends at the end of book 2 to make it seem like there is the possibility for another book。 I don’t know if there is going to be a third book or not, but I would appreciate getting more answers and seeing the characters develop more than they did。 。。。more

Just like a Rian Johnson take on Star Wars, The Hawthorne Legacy took all the gritty and mysterious foreshadowing from The Inheritance Games and completely nullified it。 And like movie-goers at Star Wars Episode VIII, readers of this book are left with the same nagging questions: Does any of it matter? Was it all worth it? And PLEASE, will there be a sequel?More ranting (and Star Wars comparisons!) follow, but I am giving some major spoilers, so。。。fair warning! (view spoiler)[I’m not going to lie to you - the letdown I felt after finding out that Avery really was just the glass ballerina or the knife was almost palpable。 After being led to believe that she was somehow more, that her parentage was significant (kind of like Rey in The Last Jedi。。。hmmm), I feel like the author’s choice to just obliterate that, was。。。probably more realistic, but way less satisfying to the puzzle loving, mystery junkie。 It felt almost like the author was trying to throw another curveball at the last minute to be tricky, but the effect fell flat。 Which was incredibly disappointing because I LOVED the first book。But speaking of curveballs (or non-curveballs), let’s talk about the pathetic attempt at a love triangle, shall we? Honestly, the love triangle just felt lazy and forced to me。 Avery always had something with Jameson, and other than thinking that Grayson was hot and nice and protective, there really wasn’t anything there。 And while I personally would have chosen Grayson (I mean, the fiercely loyal, protective, nurturing type is kind of my type… *see my husband as example #1), it was never really an option for Avery’s character。 And everyone knew it。 So I do approve of how that ended (Jameson had a lot of growth throughout the story, so he was pretty awesome by the end), but the love triangle was unnecessary and kind of a waste of pages。And going back to our Rian Johnson metaphor。。。 just like Snoke, in Star Wars, was expected to be this major player, but ended up being a creepy, boring, nobody with zero plot interest。。。 Toby ended up being barely worth the time - especially since (view spoiler)[ he ended up NOT being Avery’s father! (hide spoiler)] So this whole book, this whole story arc was just a way to tell Toby’s (rather boring) story。 I mean, at least Snoke got an awesome death scene。 We didn’t even get that with Toby。But, never fear, dear readers (and Star Wars watchers!) I am convinced that there WILL be a sequel! Just like JJ Abrams had to salvage the wreckage that was episode VIII, Jennifer Lynn Barnes will probably try to salvage the debris of this series by concluding the trilogy on a (hopefully) high note。 I mean, we still have to find Xander and Jameson’s fathers, right? (And we all know Xander is the best Hawthorne prove me wrong!) (hide spoiler)]Thank you to Edelweiss and the publisher for giving me an advance reader copy of this book。 I appreciated the opportunity to read this early! 。。。more

The Hawthorne Legacy is the brilliant and thrilling sequel to The Inheritance Games by the incomparable Jennifer Lynn Barnes。 It is perhaps no secret that I ADORE her writing, complex characters and skill for piecing together a compelling plot that twists, turns and endlessly surprises。 Once again, Jennifer Lynn Barnes has crafted a novel that is totally addictive and she makes me like - nay love - things I usually hate。 Like love triangles。 Of course, it is a love triangle involving two Hawthor The Hawthorne Legacy is the brilliant and thrilling sequel to The Inheritance Games by the incomparable Jennifer Lynn Barnes。 It is perhaps no secret that I ADORE her writing, complex characters and skill for piecing together a compelling plot that twists, turns and endlessly surprises。 Once again, Jennifer Lynn Barnes has crafted a novel that is totally addictive and she makes me like - nay love - things I usually hate。 Like love triangles。 Of course, it is a love triangle involving two Hawthorne boys and a girl who doesn’t have time for either of them, so what’s not to love。 But the romance is really just a small part of the book。 We readers are taken on a thrilling ride as Avery recovers from the news she received in the last book。 One puzzle might have been solved, but there are so many more still to unravel。 DNA tests, fund raising galas, new unexpected relatives, deadly attacks, high school, and secret vaults。 Avery and Jameson team up to uncover the secrets of the past and how they relate to Avery’s current position as the beneficiary of the Hawthorne vast estate。 Avery gets to explore a little bit more of her inheritance, including a nice snowy hideaway。 There isn’t much time for relaxing or skiing, though, as Avery races to stay ahead of the people who want her dead, the people who want her silenced and the clues that seem never ending。 I love that Max, Avery’s best friend, is given a bigger role in the book。 She joins Avery at Hawthorne house and she is the perfect loyal, steadfast and lighthearted relief to the Hawthorne brothers’ brooding, mesmerising intensity。 Okay, let’s talk about that love triangle。 I love, love, love what Jennifer Lynn Barnes does to explore the relationships Avery has with both Jameson and Grayson。 It didn’t go down as I was expecting, and for that I am grateful。 It was honest, real and surprising and I loved it。 The Hawthorne Legacy could be the end of The Inheritance Games series or it could equally be the stepping stone for the another book。 I am happy to say I am content with (read: LOVED) the ending (unlike a certain other series I won’t name that didn’t get properly ended…cough, cough…The Fixer…cough, cough)。 But, of course, I would love to return to Avery and the Hawthorne brothers。 I would never tire of their banter, puzzle solving, competitiveness and opulent world they live in。 And Max and Xander…。just saying…。Brilliant。 Amazing。 I can’t wait to hand this to my mystery readers at school。 I know they will be desperate to get their hands of it。 For those new to the series, you must absolutely read the books in series order。 The launch of this second book is the perfect opportunity to promote again the fantastic series opener, and indeed all of J。L。 Barnes’ books。 The publishers provided an advanced readers copy of this book for reviewing purposes。 All opinions are my own。Find more reviews, reading age guides, content advisory, and recommendations on my blog Madison's Library 。。。more

I have enjoyed so many of Jennifer Lynn Barnes’ books, and I am very thankful to my friend for loaning me her ARC of The Hawthorne Legacy。 It did not disappoint as a sequel! While it took a little while to get caught back up again—there are SO many characters—the story came together smoothly。 The book is full of twists and turns and misdirections。 The pacing was a little off at times, but sometimes those, too, were just misdirections。 Overall a great mystery that teens will be sure to love!
